Overview:
The East Midlands, the fourth largest region in the UK, is one of the UK’s most
affordable places to live with an excellent quality of life. Its major towns and
cities are Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Northampton and Nottingham and the region
was named the most competitive place to do business by Deloitte. Leicester is
the highest ranked city in the East Midlands in the OMIS ‘Britain’s Best Cities’
survey, and one of the top ten locations to do business in the UK by Growing
Business magazine, again the highest placed city in the East Midlands.
The East Midlands’ central location coupled with exceptional transport links
makes added value logistics the region’s largest industry sector. Almost every
major shipping or logistics provider has a presence in the region; most of the
current supply of sites is found along the M1 corridor, particularly in
Northamptonshire.
The UK is a world leader in motorsport engineering with 80 per cent of the world
market and the region’s vast experience in high performance engineering places
the East Midlands solidly at the centre of Motorsport Valley. Specialisms
include design and manufacture of engines, race cars and precision components;
advanced materials and technologies; and rubbers and plastics. World-renowned
companies such as Cosworth, Ilmor Engineering, Honda Racing, Suzuki and Spyker
Formula 1 are located there. Honda has a fully automated and instrumented
testing facility with a wind tunnel at the team’s operations centre in Brackley.
Lola International owns and maintains the cars for A1GP at Silverstone.
“Having a base in the East
Midlands will offer us a central location and good effective communication links
to further increase our business prospects.”
Paul Williamson, business development manager, Sydac
