Overview: Scotland has a heritage steeped in
invention and offers many opportunities for the future. The larger Scottish
cities include Edinburgh (the capital), Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness and
Stirling, but there are many other towns of interest. Scotland has been named
Northern European Region of the Future 2006/07 by fDi magazine particularly for
its economic performance and human resources.
Penicillin, radar, television and the telephone were all invented and developed
in Scotland and this tradition of innovation continues today in groundbreaking
research with global potential, carried out at a number of universities. New
advances in life sciences, microelectronics, optoelectronics and communications
technologies are providing the platform for a vibrant knowledge-based economy.
“We finally selected
Edinburgh because of the combination of design skills, innovation culture and
universities with relevant research programmes that exist there.”
Gary Duncan, vice-president of engineering, Dialog Semiconductor
