Riverside renaissance: work has already begun on the 25-year
Rotherham Renaissance programme
Transportation Services:
Rotherham borough sits astride the M1 and M18 motorways, linking it to
the UK motorway network. Via the M1, it is about 35 minutes south of
the region’s main city, Leeds, and less than three hours north of
London. The M1 also gives a direct link to Scotland, via the A1(M).
East-coast and west-coast ports, including Hull, Grimsby, Immingham and
Liverpool, are within easy reach. Manchester is about an hour by road.
Rail freight depots linking directly to Europe through the Channel
Tunnel are at Doncaster (10 miles) and Wakefield (20 miles). Four
international airports - Manchester, Leeds Bradford, Humberside and
East Midlands - are within a 50-mile radius. Just a few minutes' drive
to the east, at Finningley, the new Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster
Sheffield, brings most European cities within a two- to three-hour
flight-time.
In an Assisted Area:
Rotherham is classed as a Tier 1 Assisted Area by the UK Government,
providing access to capital assistance grants such as Selective Finance
for Investment. Rotherham also shares EU Objective 1 status with the
rest of South Yorkshire, and about £700 million of EU support will be
invested by the end of 2006. That is helping attract more inward
investment, improve employment and increase productivity. Together,
Tier 1 and Objective 1 mean that Rotherham, with the rest of
surrounding South Yorkshire, offers the highest level of financial
support in the EU.
Other Kinds of Financial
Assistance on Offer:
There is assistance available towards the recruitment and training of
new employees, growth, Enterprise Zone capital allowances, and
discretionary grant assistance for local manufacturing companies. There
is also a variety of large and small loans. Details of these schemes
are available through Rotherham Investment & Development Office
(details below).
Special Sites and Locations:
Most of the land within the Dearne Valley Enterprise Zone lies within
Rotherham, at Manvers and Cortonwood. A special link road connects the
entire Zone to the A1(M) and M1 motorways. The EZ offers special tax
and other concessions to business. The main benefits include capital
cost allowances, exemption from local property taxes in business
properties, relaxation of certain criteria for some customs facilities…
and reduced red tape.
Available Sites Include:
The Enterprise Zone has a range of sites available, from 0.5-80 acres.
There are plenty of other sites available, all within easy reach of the
motorways. Latest on-stream include the Advanced Manufacturing Park,
just a few minutes from the M1’s Junction 33, where up to 100 acres are
available for development now; and Dinnington, where Renaissance South
Yorkshire is regenerating 210 acres - 90 for commercial development,
120 for high-quality public open space.
Major Business Parks:
in addition to Waverley, include: Barbot Hall; Dinnington; Hellaby;
Templeborough’s Bradmarsh, Centurion, Genesis and Bessemer; and, at
Manvers Enterprise Zone, Brookfields, Farfield and Houndhill.

Summary:
Rotherham is at the heart of the UK. It combines up-to-the-minute technologies,
including its rapidly growing high-tech-IT sector, with a culture of hard work
and quality production from a flexible and committed workforce. It has converted
from vision to reality the goal of regenerating and diversifying its economy,
thanks largely to its continuing partnership approach involving the public and
private sectors. A range of organisations is geared up to help you join a
thriving and successful business community of 4,400 companies, including many
global operators, among them 86 from 21 overseas countries. The support systems
are backed up by R&D facilities both in the borough and at two respected
universities just a few miles away in neighbouring Sheffield. Rotherham is a
green borough of 110 square miles - 70% of which is open countryside. The town
of Rotherham itself sits at the borough’s heart, surrounded by villages large
and small. Together, they are home to 249,000 people. The borough is within easy
reach of many major cities - London is just two hours by rail, up to three hours
by road - but it offers a much less stressful environment and an enviable
quality of life - and cost of living. Residential and business properties are
among the most attractively priced in the UK. There are excellent sport and
recreational facilities within the borough and within easy reach. Its three
country parks offer a host of activities, from sailing to angling, and its eight
golf courses include the championship Lindrick course. Adding to all these
attractions is the awesome Magna Science Adventure Centre. |
